Russellville baseball team tops Cordova, Hatton

The Russellville varsity baseball team improved to 7-6 on the season with wins over Cordova and Hatton.

The Golden Tigers hosted the two opponents on Saturday, and RHS defeated Cordova 11-1 in a five-inning game before topping Hatton 6-2.

Russellville outhit Cordova 8-2 and the Blue Devils committed seven errors while the Golden Tigers had only one.

Daniel Askew hit a home run and had two RBI to help RHS to victory. Brandt Cummings, Eli Boutwell and Ty Willis had two hits each, and Cayden Johns also hit safely. Boutwell, Vandiver and Willis had additional RBI. Tripp Cleveland did the pitching for Russellville with five innings of work. The right-hander struck out three and walked one, allowing no earned runs.

Later on Saturday, Russellville jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings on the way to a victory over the Hatton Hornets.

Ty Willis and Michael Scofield both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Willis had two doubles and three RBI. Scofield and Boutwell hit home runs. Cummings doubled and Askew added a single. KJ Murray had three stolen bases while Askew and Scofield swiped one each.

Brandt Cummings, Cayden Johns and Gunner Sappington combined to do the pitching. Cummings and Johns were on the mound for three innings each, and Sappington pitched one frame. The Russellville hurlers struck out 14 Hornets.

Earlier in the week, Russellville hosted Cullman and fell to the Bearcats by a 9-1 final score.

Cullman scored five runs in the top half of the first inning and added two more in both the sixth and seventh frames.

Russellville’s run came on a sixth inning RBI double by Cummings. Daniel Askew and Brodie Vandiver had the other RHS hits.

Johns got the start on the mound and went one inning. Ty Engelthaler followed in relief and worked 5.1 innings. He allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out seven. Sappington gave up one hit and no runs.

Russellville has won five of the last six games and next for the Golden Tigers will be a Class 5A area series versus the Lawrence County Red Devils.
