Russellville baseball wins big at home before losing three games on long road trip

The Russellville varsity baseball team played host to the Austin Black Bears before heading south to face the Baldwin County Tigers and the Saraland Spartans.

Russellville 10, Austin 0

The Golden Tigers got their second-straight 10-run victory of the season by defeating the Austin Black Bears at RHS Feb. 19.

Brandt Cummings hit a fourth-inning grand slam home run to help put the game out of reach. Daniel Askew had three hits and two RBI to help the Russellville offense. Eli Boutwell added two hits and three RBI, and Cayden Johns had two hits and drove-in one run. Johns and Boutwell had extra-base hits and Michael Scofield had a single.

Johns pitched all five innings to get the win. He allowed only one hit, struck out 11 and walked one batter.

Baldwin County 9, Russellville 7

Russellville’s late-inning rally came up just short as the Golden Tigers scored four runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh after falling behind 9-0 at Baldwin Co. Feb. 23.

RHS had 10 hits with Baldwin Co. picking up eight. Cummings was 4-for-5 at the plate with a triple, double and two RBI. Neyland Baker added three hits and two RBI, and other Russellville hits came off the bats of Boutwell, Johns and Elliott Green.

Ty Engelthaler pitched four innings before Neyland Baker worked two innings of relief on the mound.

Saraland 7, Russellville 4

The Saraland Spartans broke a 4-4 sixth inning tie with three runs in the frame to get a win over RHS in the first of two games between the schools Feb. 24.

The Golden Tigers scored all their runs in the top of the fifth. Cummings, Johns, Boutwell, Brodie Vandiver and Elliott Green had the RHS hits. Russellville RBI came from Johns, Boutwell and Green. Cummings and Johns were the pitchers for the Golden Tigers.

Saraland 11, Russellville 2

The Spartans scored in every inning in which they batted to get the win in game two of the day. Russellville was able to outhit Saraland 4-3, but the Golden Tigers committed five errors to only one by the Spartans.

Russellville’s hits were by Vandiver, Johns, Boutwell and KJ Murray. RBI came from Baker and Boutwell. Gunner Sappington got the start and pitched two innings, Brayden Entrekin pitched one inning and Tripp Cleveland pitched three innings.
