Brett Voss has been named as the temporary athletic director and head football coach for Russellville High School. The announcement came during Tuesday’s meeting of the Russellville City Schools Board of Education.

“I’m looking forward to getting to work with every athletic program,” Voss explained. “I have a passion, not only for the football program, but for every single program in our system, and I want to see every program thrive.”

As interim head football coach, he will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the football program until a permanent replacement is hired. As athletic director, he’ll be responsible for making sure the current protocols, procedures and policies are enforced, while, as he put it, “working to be the biggest resource for each program” that he can be.

Voss said on the football side of things, it’s about “staying on the course and keeping everybody focused on the task at hand,” noting “we’ve got a great staff, and we’ve got great kids.”

“The kids know me, they know what I expect,” he added. “It’s just been business as usual here.”

Voss explained they are in the “February phase” of the off-season football program currently, which involves weight training.

Originally from Speake, Ala., he’s been working in the Russellville system for 13 years, 12 of which have been with the high school football team. Last year, he was the head middle school football coach and athletic director. Before that, he was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator for varsity for five years.

Prior to that, he was an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at RHS for three of the four years Mark Heaton was there. Heaton served in the role Voss currently holds before John Ritter had the position. Ritter left earlier this month to take on the role of head football coach at Decatur High School.

“He’s filled in before when this has happened,” explained RHS principal Dr. Jeremy Madden regarding the selection of Voss. “He does a great job. We’re lucky to have him be willing to step in and help us. He’s a great guy.”
