Tharptown student signs with Calhoun

Tharptown High School’s Jessie Mitchell became the school’s first male athlete to sign an athletic scholarship when he signed with Calhoun Community College to run cross country last week.

Mitchell has run cross country for several years at Tharptown. He finished in the top ten in every regular season race and finished in first place at the Athens Bible Invitational meet.

“Just being around Jessie for half the season, it was easy to see his love for the sport of cross country,” said Darrel Baker, who took over in the middle of the year when Joseph Brown took the Northwest Shoals Community College cross country job.

All his success came from hard work and effort,” added Baker. “He deserves a lot of credit for helping us reach the state finals this year.”
