Phil Campbell girls capture seventh straight area title, fall in subregion

The Phil Campbell Bobcats captured their seventh straight area title, beating the Danville Hawks 54-50. The Bobcats fell in subregion play for the second straight year, this time to Childersburg, 50-36.

In the 3A, Area 15 championship, Phil Campbell controlled the game from the opening tip, jumping out to a 14-11 lead in the first quarter. The Bobcats extended their lead to 34-27 at halftime. Phil Campbell built up a ten point lead by the end of the third quarter, 47-37. The Bobcats had to hold off a late Danville surge where the Hawks outscored Phil Campbell 13-7 in the final period of play.

Macy Hardy and Leela Baker led Phil Campbell with 19 points and 18 points respectively. Ayla Stowe and Hannah Welborn scored eight points each. Sidda Rogers finished with one point.

In subregion play, Phil Campbell got off to a hot start, outscoring Childersburg 15-11. After that, it was all Childersburg. The Tigers outscored the Bobcats 39-21 over the remaining three quarters of play.

The Bobcats had no answer for Childersburg inside, getting dominated on the boards by Tiger senior Aubry Foy who scored 19 points. Childersburg’s defense also stifled the Bobcats, limiting Phil Campbell to just three second half field goals, all by Hardy.

Hardy, who scored her one thousandth career point early in the game, led all scorers with 20 points. Hannah Welborn and Leela Baker scored seven points each. Sidda Rogers finished the game with four points.
