Vina girls basketball team tops Fayette County

The Vina Red Devils beat Class 4A Fayette County 49-37 last week.

The Red Devils led the Tigers 18-7 at the end of the first quarter, but Fayette County roared back in the second quarter to cut Vina’s lead to 27-25. Richie Hester’s squad extended their lead to 35-31 at the end of the third quarter and dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 14-2 to secure the win.

Sara Harper led Vina with 13 points, followed by Lana Bell with 12 points and Khylee Brooks with 11 points.

Layla Hester added five points, Mikala Mitchell four points, Mackenzie Elrod four points and Kaley Attaway one point.

Vina lost to Waterloo, 62-56.

The Cougars dominated the first quarter, leading 23-10, and extended their lead at halftime, 38-21.

Vina made a comeback attempt in the third quarter, outscoring Waterloo 19-8, and cutting the Cougars lead to 46-40. Waterloo put the game away in the fourth quarter.

Lana Bell led Vina with 15 points, followed by Kaley Attaway with 12 points.

Sara Harper added five points, Mikala Mitchell four points, Khylee Brooks four points, Braxtyn Quinn two points, Harleigh Ridge two points, Brooklyn McEwen two points and Makenzie Elrod one point.
