Russellville City Council authorizes paving grant application
During its regular meeting Feb. 6, the Russellville City Council voted to request funding through the Rebuild Alabama Act to go toward repaving work on Clay Avenue.
“This would be a huge help to our city with the repaving of Clay Avenue,” explained Russellville Mayor David Grissom. “The street’s used a lot and goes over by the schools. It would be beneficial to the whole city.”
Grissom explained work on Clay Avenue will include leveling, resurfacing and traffic striping, from Adams Street to Summit Street.
“The project will include minor widening of 2 feet or less in various locations along Clay Avenue and improvements at the intersection with Chucky Mullins Memorial Drive,” he added. “These intersection improvements will provide proper access from Clay Avenue to the Russellville High School and elementary school campuses.”
Grissom said the city has applied for the grant for several years but has not been approved on prior applications. He said he’s hoping this year will be different, noting the city’s commitment of $65,885 as a match if the grant is approved.
The city would also be responsible for preliminary engineering, construction engineering and inspection costs. The project would be let locally by contract.
Grissom said preliminary estimation of the total construction cost of Clay Avenue is $315,885.88, with $250,000 of that amount being requested through the Rebuild Alabama grant application. If approved, this would cover 80 percent of the total construction cost.
In other business, the council approved:
- ACH agreement with Valley State Bank.
- Consulting agreement with JMCM for 2022 Assistance with Firefighters Grants.
- Jam on Sloss Lake fireworks agreement.
- Letter of resignation from Officer Kerry Hallman in the Russellville Police Department.
- Declaration of a vacancy for patrol officer in the RPD.
- Declaration of two vacancies for lieutenant, one vacancy for captain and one vacancy for sergeant in the RPD, to be promoted from within the classified service.
