Red Bay runs away from Phil Campbell for championship
The Red Bay Tigers held off a pesky Phil Campbell basketball team before pulling away for a 47-33 win and a Franklin County Championship.
Phil Campbell started the game hot with Cam Habada and Quentin Hyde hitting three pointers, giving the Bobcats an 11-9 first-quarter lead.
Red Bay stepped up the defensive attack, however, holding Phil Campbell to four points in the second quarter and five points in the third quarter.
Red Bay led Phil Campbell 18-15 at the half and extended that lead to 28-20 in the third quarter.
The Tigers pulled away from the Bobcats in the fourth quarter. Lawson Glover scored eight points, and Ethan McCoy scored seven points, to help Red Bay secure the win and the championship.
Glover led Red Bay with 13 points. He was followed by McCoy and Holden Inmon with nine points each. Cody Carnes added six points, B.P. Blair five points and Conner Humphries three points.
Hyde led Phil Campbell with 10 points. Habada followed with eight points, Kyle Pace with five points, Canaan Clay with four points, Cole Pace with four points and Bryant Hyde with two points.
SEMIFINALS: Phil Campbell 57, Belgreen 34
After a sluggish start, the Phil Campbell Bobcats pulled away from the Belgreen Bulldogs to win 57-34 and advance to the finals of the Franklin County Tournament.
Phil Campbell led Belgreen 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. A strong performance by Bryant Hyde helped Phil Campbell extend that lead to 28-20 at halftime, and the Bobcats extended their lead to 44-27 by the end of the third quarter.
Bryant Hyde led Phil Campbell with 15 points, eight coming in the second quarter. Habada followed with 13 points and Quentin Hyde with 10 points. Pace added nine points, Gage Baker had six points, and Clay added four points.
Austin James led Belgreen with 18 points. Jonathan Mendoza added seven points, Alex Guidry five points, Hunter Woodruff two points, Will King one point and Ely Mitchell one point.
SEMIFINALS: Red Bay 70, Tharptown 42
The Red Bay Tigers handily beat the Tharptown Wildcats 70-42 to advance to the finals of the Franklin County Tournament.
Red Bay outpaced Tharptown 15-9 in the first quarter and extended that lead to 33-22. The Tigers pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 23-16 to make the score 56-38.
Glover led Red Bay with 13 points, followed by Ty Reynolds and Blair with 11 points each. McCoy added nine points, Kennedy Wilemon six points, Carnes five points, Inmon four points and Conner Humphries three points.
Hunter Motes led Tharptown with 13 points, followed by Dylan Valdez with 12 points. Malachi Minor and Jackson Clement added six points each. Dawson Higgins scored three points, and Dylan Dolley chipped in two points.
QUARTERFINALS: Tharptown 59, Vina 26
Valdez scored 22 points to lead the Tharptown Wildcats to an easy 59-26 win over the Vina Red Devils.
Tharptown led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter and 31-13 at halftime. After an even third quarter, Tharptown outscored Vina 22-7 in the fourth quarter to coast to the win.
Higgins followed Valdez, scoring 12 points. Minor added 10 points. Motes finished with nine points, Dalton Maldanado four points, Clement two points and Edwin Vela two points.
Grayson Ridge led Vina with 11 points, followed by Hunter Griffith with 10 points. Conner Davidson added five points.
