Vina boys, girls get wins on court

The Vina varsity boys and varsity girls both picked up wins this past week. The boys beat Brilliant 73-54, and the girls beat St. Bernard 51-42.

In the boys game, the Red Devils jumped out to an early 20-6 lead and held a 34-18 lead at halftime. Vina extended that lead to 54-36 at the end of the third quarter en route to the win.

Conner Davidson and Hunter Griffith combined for 50 of Vina’s 73 points.

“Conner, Hunter and Nate Stidham are my senior trio that have really anchored us this year,” said Vina head coach Randy Barnes. “I’m proud of the kids, and I believe they are starting to see that hard work pays off.”

Davidson led with 26 points, and Griffith followed with 24 points. Stidham added 13 points.

Christian Purser tacked on five points, and Grayson Ridge added two points.

In the girls’ game, Sarah Harper and Kaitlyn Athey combined for 37 points to help the Red Devils win.

The Red Devil girls led St. Bernard 18-9 in the first quarter, but their lead was cut to 26-20 at halftime. St. Bernard continued that comeback, cutting Vina’s lead to 32-29 in the third quarter, but the Red Devils held on for the win.

Harper had 20 points and six assists. Athey had 17 points, making four three-pointers.

K.K. Mitchell added four points. Kaley Attaway and Miranda King scored three points each. Carly Belvins added two points.
