Belgreen basketball teams face different fortunes in area

BOYS

The Belgreen boys find themselves in unfamiliar territory after half of their area games. After beating Vina, Belgreen fell to Phillips and Hackleburg this past week, giving the Bulldogs a 1-2 area record.

Belgreen fell to the Phillips Bears 55-41 early in the week. Austin James led Belgreen with 15 points, followed by Braycen Johnson with 12 points. Will King added five points, and Jonathan Mendoza added four points. Miguel Willingham, Ely Mitchell and Hunter Woodruff scored two points each.

In the 47-33 loss to Hackleburg, Johnson led with 13 points.

In the win column, Belgreen beat Cherokee in a non-area contest 56-27. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 12-3 first quarter lead and extended the lead to 28-11 at halftime.

James led Belgreen with 25 points, followed in double digits by Mendoza with 12 points.

GIRLS

The Belgreen Lady Bulldogs are in the driver’s seat to host their area tournament in February. With a win over Vina already, Belgreen also beat Phillips and Hackleburg this past week convincingly to improve to 3-0 in area play.

Belgreen beat Phillips 60-20, with three players posting double digits in the scoring column: Noelle Willingham with 14, Makenna Fisher with 13 and Dacota Green with 11.

Belgreen led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter and scored 29 points in the second quarter to extend that lead to 43-9 at halftime.

Alayna Tate and Carson Hovater scored six points each. Sydnee West and Isabella Tate scored five points each. Makayla Willingham added four points. Jacqueline Alban and Bryn Scott scored two points each.

Belgreen beat Hackleburg 60-34 later in the week. Green led the Bulldogs with 23 points, and Noelle Willingham added 17 points.

In a mid-week matchup, Belgreen also beat Cherokee 50-15.
