RHS teams take court versus Deshler, Hamilton

The Russellville High School varsity basketball teams recently faced 4A opponents Deshler and Hamilton on the court. The Golden Tigers’ home game versus Florence scheduled for Nov. 29 was postponed because of the weather.

BOYS

Deshler 89, Russellville 80

RHS traveled to Tuscumbia Nov. 28 and fell to Deshler. DHS led 22-12 at the end of the first quarter and held a 47-32 advantage at the half. The Golden Tigers outscored the opponent 25-18 in the fourth period, but Deshler held on for the victory.

KJ Murray led Russellville with 15 points. He was joined in double figures by Amir Williams with 14, Bralynn Vincent and Conner Warhurst with 12 apiece and Gavin Hyde with 11. Mike Young and Malachi Duncan added five each, and Tilmon Baker scored four, while Jah Williams added two.

Russellville 85, Hamilton 63

The Golden Tigers went to Hamilton Dec. 2 and took down the Aggies. RHS led 41-31 at the half and 66-45 after three quarters of play.

Russellville had 11 players get into the scoring column, with Duncan leading the way with 25 points. Amir Williams added 17, and Vincent scored 10. Young scored six, while Randell Johnson, Murray and Hyde had five each. Jah Williams and Baker had four points apiece, and Malachi Gholston finished with two, as did Conner Warhurst.

Deshler 91, Russellville 83

Dec. 5 featured a rematch between RHS and Deshler. The two teams gave it their all in the high-scoring contest, and Deshler again came away with the win.

Russellville (3-3) outscored DHS 22-19 in the second quarter but trailed 42-37 at the half. The Golden Tigers were led in scoring by Vincent’s 21 points. Warhurst added 14, and Duncan scored 13. Amir Williams joined them in double figures with 12.

GIRLS

Deshler 76, Russellville 41

The highly-ranked Deshler Lady Tigers were too much for RHS to handle in Tuscumbia. DHS had a 43-13 lead at the half and cruised to victory.

Ella Copeland scored 16 points to pace Russellville, and Jacey Moore closely followed with 15. Also scoring for RHS were Laila Hill and Anna Beth Oliver with three points apiece, while Avery Watts and Desiree Medina had two points each.

Hamilton 68, Russellville 61 (OT)

The Lady Golden Tigers traveled to Hamilton and, for the second time this season, came up just short of victory against the Lady Aggies.

HHS led 37-36 at the half and outscored Russellville 8-1 in overtime to get the victory.

RHS got scoring from seven players, with Moore leading the way with 20 points. Copeland scored 19, Jenna Whitfield added nine and Oliver scored seven. Watts, Hill and Hope Bonman all added two points each.

Deshler 89, Russellville 29

RHS and Deshler began the game Dec. 5 in a close battle, but the Tigers from Tuscumbia used a 34-2 second quarter to take a 61-17 lead into the half and ultimately get the win.

Russellville (4-5) was led in scoring by Copeland’s eight points. Oliver and Moore added six each, Watts had four, Whitfield and Bonman scored two apiece, and Medina made a free throw.
