DKG ‘travels’ to Canada for November meeting

“Riding the Bus to Canada as DKG Goes Worldwide” was the title of the Alpha Upsilon Chapter November meeting.

Canada was the first country that joined Delta Kappa Gamma International, June 7, 1952.  Canada is known for its beautiful foliage, the Rocky Mountains and scenery.

The First Baptist Church Green Room was decorated with fall leaves accented with Canadian icons and emblems such as the Canadian flag, the Coat of Arms, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Maple Leaf Tartan. Refreshments featured Canadian food favorites, such as Canadian bacon sliders, apples with dip, cranberry butter tarts, pecan pie and Canadian ginger ale. Serving as hostesses were Brenda Oliver, Donna Bolton, Judy Baker, Lela Ray and myself.

Members were given handouts on the country’s state-run system of public education, college and universities, vocational schools and apprenticeships. In addition to public schools, there are also thousands of private schools in Canada, both secular and religious-based institutions.

DKG Alpha Upsilon member Beverly Donaldson reported on a trip she recently took to Canada.  She shared some highlights of the trip, the beautiful terrain – and the 25 inches of snow she and her friend experienced.

As Scholarship Committee chair, Beverly also presented the program on “Creating a Brighter Tomorrow.” She informed members about scholarships and grant-in-aid funding available for students and non-members as well as emergency fund, grants and personal services for members.

The Inspiration was given by Mollie Bates King, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ginger Saylor.

Donna Bolton presented “Debbie Beason in the Sister Spotlight.” Debbie has been a member of DKG for eight years, and both her children are educators.

The DKG Alpha Upsilon Strategic Action Plan was presented for approved of members and will be mailed to DKG Alabama by Dec. 1.

In other business, Veterans Day cards were mailed to Troy Oliver, Barry Moore, Hoyt Dillard and Tim Guinn, expressing appreciation for their services for our country.

The meeting concluded with a Book Swap and singing of The Delta Kappa Song.
