McWane Center brings ocean fun, learning to RPL

From types of water to waves, sea life and more, children in the summer reading program at Russellville Public Library learned about many things on and in the ocean, as well as the importance and dangers faced. McWane Science Center presenter Kim Gerlach gave an interactive presentation, including help from the audience to demonstrate various scientific concepts related to the ocean.

Gerlach explained and conducted demonstrations to help show how much of the water on the planet is fresh water versus salt water, explaining that some water is in glaciers, caves and other layers of earth. She also talked about ways of collecting water and how much of the fresh water represents sources used for obtaining drinking water.

With the help of a Slinky and a child volunteer, she demonstrated how longitudinal waves move. Other types of waves discussed include light waves and transverse waves.

The library is located at 110 Lawrence Street E., and it is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
