PC Council discusses equipment, other needs
In its regular work session and meeting Nov. 2, the Phil Campbell City Council discussed the progress toward replacing needed equipment at the fire department.
The council is in the process of looking to replace broken emergency rescue tools, the Jaws of Life, at the VFD. VFD Chief Mike Rice said currently when that tool is needed, it has to be borrowed from the Russellville Fire Department.
Among the models that have been considered are the AMKUS and HURST products, and two quotes have been obtained so far.
Rice said HURST is preferable to AMKUS because of its superior spreading distance and power and being more suited for intended use cases, as well as seemingly being more durable.
Mayor Mike McQuary said Florida Coastal Solutions requested the opportunity to give a demonstration of their equipment. It was agreed the company can come and give a demonstration when arrangements are made.
Generator
In other business, the council reported the gas department has run lines, and a contractor is in place, in preparation to install a generator that will be able to power the fire department, safe room and City Hall.
Paving
From among community members who attended the meeting, Mr. Williams stated he had attended a council meeting four or five months ago when paving was approved, including for Hyde Road, and he requested an update as to when that might take place, stating everybody complains about it.
McQuary said it has been difficult to get things done because “everybody’s backed up.”
Town Budget
In another question, Williams requested an update as to whether a budget has been approved by the town. “You’re supposed to have a budget to operate a city municipality,” said Williams.
The council said a rough budget from town CPA Don Wallace has been received, but they haven’t used it yet because they are waiting to see how things pan out when Wallace brings in the audit.
Swimming Pool/Walking Track
Regarding an inquiry on the status of land that joins the city splash pad for a swimming pool and walking track, McQuary said all that’s needed is to receive the title from the insurance company. He said grants will be looked into for those purposes.
McQuary said especially with COVID-19 considerations, cities are being encouraged to create more outdoor recreation opportunities – noting he expects that to help with seeking grants.
The next work session and meeting of the Phil Campbell City Council will be Nov. 16, with the work session at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7 p.m.
