Red Bay student places second in county in 4-H Chick Chain

The 2021 Chick Chain show and auction were held Oct. 4 at the North Alabama State Fairgrounds. For Franklin County, Maddie Pearson of Red Bay High School placed second in Senior Showmanship, Speckled Sussex breed class and Senior Record Book.

The intent of the 4-H Chick Chain project is to teach young people recommended management practices for growing and raising chickens. Each participant received 1-day-old chicks.

“All the project participants have worked hard caring for their animals, along with keeping up-to-date records,” said Franklin County Extension Coordinator Katernia Cole Coffey. “The show and auction served as the culmination of each youth’s hard work and dedication.”

Cole Coffey said goals of the project including helping participants develop poultry management skills, learn to produce healthy chickens, develop awareness of business management, develop record-keeping skills and realize the pride of accomplishment.
