Embrace benefits of education association memberships

Oct. 20 the Franklin County Education Retirees Association will hold its first meeting of the year. President Sandy Gibson stated, “We extend a welcome back to our current members, invite those of you who have not yet become a member and encourage all new retirees to join our group. We will enjoy fellowship with our friends and meet new ones.”

The meeting will be a “come-and-go” event, and it will be held at the Russellville First United Methodist Church Ministry Center from 10 a.m. until noon. Free flu shots for all and wellness screenings for those who are eligible will be available. Be sure to bring your insurance card.

Membership dues are $12 annually for education retirees. Friends of public education may join as an associate for $5 a year.

The FCERA’s dues are a small investment for the benefits received.

The local unit provides a unified advocating voice and offers information, fellowship and opportunities to continue to serve our retired education community.

Also consider joining the Alabama Education Retirees Association. AERA is the retired division of the Alabama Education Association and assists with specific retiree issues. It is the only association in Alabama that works on behalf of public education retirees.

AERA membership offers informative state meetings, legislative advocacy efforts, health insurance information, TRS/PEEHIP advocacy, group insurance and financial products, subscriptions to “The AERA Voice” and the AEA “Alabama School Journal” and statewide community service projects.

By participating with other retirees at local and state meetings, you keep informed on relevant pension and insurance information.

The Alabama Education Association is Alabama’s largest professional association. AEA represents teachers, future educators, bus drivers, librarians, custodians, postsecondary employees, child nutrition professionals, principals, secretaries, assistant principals, paraprofessionals, coaches, school nurses, school resource officers, counselors, registrars, central office staff and superintendents.

AEA membership benefits include $1 million liability insurance, legal assistance, local attorney program, training, new educator support, access savings card, VisionChoice discount, term life, NEA complimentary life insurance, financial programs, supplemental health insurance and full-time local AEA representative in school systems.

These education organizations are available to assist current and retiree personnel.  It’s up to you to join – if you are not already a member.
