Bobcats stay undefeated in region with win against Colts

Bryant Hyde ran wild on the Clements Colts Friday night to help the Phil Campbell Bobcats stay unbeaten in region play.

Hyde was a workhorse for the Bobcats, carrying the ball 22 times for 233 yards and five touchdowns in the 37-14 win. He scored touchdowns in all four quarters for Phil Campbell.

“Our offensive line really got out there and worked hard and opened some holes for Bryant to have a great night,” said Phil Campbell Coach Kevin Barnwell. “Bryant has a lot of speed and quickness, and if he gets in the open field, he is hard to take down.”

Barnwell said after being shut out by Lamar County in week two, he took a hard look at his offensive game plan and decided to make some adjustments. So far, those adjustments appear to have paid off, with the Bobcats scoring 55 and 37 points in the past two games.

“I knew we needed to make some changes if we were going to be able to compete in our region,” said Barnwell. “We need to do less finesse and more of a run straight at the defense approach.”

Hyde put the Bobcats on the board first with 8:08 to go in the first quarter when he broke free down the Clements sideline and sprinted 56 yards to paydirt.

Quarterback Kyle Pace ran the ball in for the two-point conversion to give Phil Campbell an 8-0 lead.

Clements tied the game 8-8 with 2:44 to go in the first quarter on an 11-yard pass play.

Hyde struck again early in the second quarter with a 33-yard touchdown run. Pace’s pass to Blain Goodson completed the two-point conversion, giving Phil Campbell a 16-8 lead.

Hyde scored from 17 yards out with 9:42 to go in the third quarter and ran in the two-point conversion to extend the Bobcat lead to 24-8.

Clements cut Phil Campbell’s lead to 24-14 with 5:58 to go in the third quarter, but it was all Bobcats from there, with Hyde scoring twice on runs of 50 and 21 yards.

Noah Raper also had nine carries for 66 yards and led the defense with nine tackles.

The Bobcats are off this week and will return to action next week when they host Haleyville.
