RHS cheerleaders hold elementary cheer clinic at West Elementary

More than 150 Russellville students from Pre-K through fifth grade participated in the annual Mini Cheerleading Clinic hosted by the Russellville Varsity Cheerleaders and mascot Champ this past week.

During this clinic, each grade level learned an individual cheer, cheerleading motions, standard cheer jumps and a group cheer dance – and topped off the experience by performing on field Friday before the Golden Tigers’ big win over Mae Jemison.

“My cheerleaders always look forward to this event,” said varsity cheerleading Coach Stephanie Mayfield. “They get to mentor and lead the next generation of Russellville cheerleaders. These exceptional young ladies absolutely love working with these girls.

Mayfield said she still remembers when her own daughters participated in these clinics and the wonderful memories they made. “I hope these young ladies get that same, fun-filled experience,” said Mayfield.

“What we hope to do with these clinics is to instill a love for cheerleading in these young girls,” Mayfield added. “Our program has grown exponentially in skill and accomplishment during the past few years, and that’s all due to the dedication of these young ladies.”

Mayfield pointed out several senior girls in recent years have signed cheerleading scholarships, and one received a dance scholarship.

“I believe that, due to stereotypes, people don’t realize how much hard work, preparation, technical skill and practice time goes into preparing for each event where these girls perform,” Mayfield said. “We want to help the community realize that cheerleading is a wonderful sport that builds character, athleticism, sportsmanship and dedication.”

Mayfield said she and the varsity cheerleaders would like to thank the elementary school principals, Ann Scott and Kristie Ezell, for all of their help making this event possible and the parents for allowing their daughters to participate in the clinic and performance at the game.
