Phil Campbell gets poised for inaugural season on court

The Phil Campbell volleyball team is a startup program competing for the first time. Coach Amy Moss is starting the program for the Bobcats.

Q: Since you are a first-year program, you obviously don’t have any top returning players. Which players have stood out for you this summer as you get ready to start fall practice?

A: We have some really tall girls at the net, like senior Faith Cook, juniors Madison Branch, Allie Herring and Alexis Stewart and sophomore Hannah Welborn. They just have to develop their approach, timing and blocking skills.

We are still trying to develop our setters. It is the hardest position on the court. Senior Jade Roberson and freshman Kaylie Motes have done a really good job of being leaders on the court and trying to learn the position.

Senior Harley Cummings, sophomore Alexa Hawkins and freshman Lydia Garrison have really done a good job of learning to pass and serve.

Q: What have you learned about your team through summer and heading into fall practice?

A: I feel like we have some of the most athletic girls around. They just don’t have the experience yet. They have worked hard all summer to learn the rules and skills it takes to be successful in volleyball.

We have been stressing patience all summer. They have had a great attitude, and they have been willing to work.

Q: What are your expectations of this team?

A: We want to be competitive in the county and ultimately win championships down the road. Right now, we have to celebrate small successes. I am really proud of how far they have come this summer and can’t wait to watch them continue to grow.

The big thing for us is to build consistency and confidence. That will just come with practice, effort and playing the game. I hope our seniors look back and are proud of what they started at Phil Campbell.

Phil Campbell competes in Class 3A Area 16 with Clements, Elkmont and Lauderdale County.
