Take precautions against summer dangers

Summer is undeniably a time for fun in the sun, for gatherings and traveling, for soaking up the season. But as you go out to enjoy Franklin County over the next couple of months, we hope you will keep safety in mind.

There are so many potential hazards in the summer time that we don’t encounter the rest of the year. From sunburn and heat stroke, to drowning, to vacation travel incidents, to out-of-control grill fires and more, there are unfortunately plenty of ways to bring injury to yourself enjoying your favorite summer activities.

So as you go about enjoying this season, please keep safety in mind. We don’t want to report on any major hazards, injuries or fatalities this summer.

Use caution with fireworks. Load up on sunscreen and bug spray. Wear your seatbelt and don’t drive sleepy or under the influence.

Stay hydrated. Keep cool, and be sure to check on your pets and neighbors, especially those who might be especially susceptible to heat-related injuries and illnesses.

As you enjoy our beautiful Franklin County lakes or local facilities like the Russellville Pool or Red Bay Water Park, keep safety in mind there, too. Non-swimmers can say safe with a life jacket or other flotation device. Don’t leave children unsupervised around water, as a terrible accident can happen so quickly.

Practice fire safety, too, by not leaving grills or other cookers unattended. From smokers to deep fryers, one careless moment can lead to disasters.

We’re not trying to bring doom and gloom to the fun of summer. We just want everyone to safely enjoy the fun this season has to offer.
