United Way announces virtual singing competition, fundraiser

Calling all musical talents: The United Way of Northwest Alabama is hosting the first-ever virtual singing competition to take place in northwest Alabama, with a July 6 sign-up deadline.

Shoals Sing United will “celebrate and recognize great musical talent in Colbert, Lauderdale, Franklin and Marion counties while helping our community grow stronger through the efforts of United Way,” according to the organization.

Some big bucks are on the line for winners. The virtual singing competition and fundraiser, which is open to local bands and musicians, will award $2,500, a recording session at FAME Studios and an upcoming live performance opportunity as the grand prize.

An additional competitor will win a recording session at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios.

Money raised during tournament voting will support United Way of Northwest Alabama in its efforts for the health, education and financial stability of every member of the community.

“The Shoals area is no stranger to the music scene. We have a rich history of musical talent as well as budding musicians with new music on the horizon,” said Jennifer McNulty, president and CEO of United Way of Northwest Alabama. “This past year has been tough on so many, and our hope is Shoals Sing United will give the community a chance to have a little fun while coming together to help those in need.”

Shoals Sing United will be organized in a single-elimination bracket tournament set by a selection committee. Musicians/bands must submit registration for the tournament by July 6 at 8 a.m. The bracket and first round match-up dates will be announced soon after.

The winner of each match-up will be based on the number of votes submitted to United Way’s Shoals Sing United fundraiser, with each $1 contribution counting as one vote.

For eligibility requirements and to enter the tournament, musicians and bands can visit www.uwnwal.org/sing. Registration is open now.
