RHS softball goes winless in spring break tournament

The Russellville Lady Golden Tigers went to Gulf Shores for the varsity softball Gulf Coast Classic and struggled to get things going their way.

RHS went winless in five games over the course of three days and was shutout three times.

Pool action got underway for Russellville with a 9-0 loss to Columbia Central, Tennessee, in a four-inning contest, in which the Lady Golden Tigers were no-hit.

Two pitchers combined for the Columbia Central no-hitter. Paislee James did the pitching for RHS, and Emma Campbell reached base on an error.

Later that day, Russellville fell to Madison County by a 2-1 final score. Summer Butler and Emma Hubbert had two hits each to lead RHS, and Maddy Green added a double and the Russellville RBI. Jenna Whitfield and Natalie Nichols also hit safely, and Butler scored the RHS run.

Kailee Simpson pitched five innings for Russellville, giving up two hits and two unearned runs. She struck out seven and walked one.

Day two started with RHS losing to Enterprise by a 2-0 score.

Butler again had two hits, and she was joined by Simpson, with a double apiece. Jaiden Calvert and Green also hit safely for Russellville.

Jacey Moore pitched all six innings for RHS. She struck out four and walked one while throwing 88 pitches. She gave up five hits, and the Enterprise runs were of the unearned variety.

Later that same day, seven RHS errors were costly in a 5-0 loss to Daphne in a five-inning game. James got the start in the pitching circle, and she gave up six hits and five unearned runs. Fallin Cox, Whitfield, Simpson and Hubbert had hits. Campbell reached base via a walk.

The final game for the Lady Tigers on the coast was a 4-2 loss to Dothan. Russellville (8-15) got two hits from Whitfield and one each from Butler and Calvert. Whitfield’s day included a double, a run and an RBI.

Nichols scored the other Russellville run, and Kailee Simpson did the pitching. The senior struck out eight over five innings.
