Golden Tiger softball hosts Spring Frenzy

The Russellville varsity softball team hosted the annual Spring Frenzy tournament, and the Lady Golden Tigers finished the two-day event with a 3-1 record.

RHS (7-8) faced Danville March 12 to get things underway, and the Lady Golden Tigers won 13-9.

Russellville’s Kailee Simpson went 3-for-3, including a home run, a double and four RBIs. Fallin Cox smacked a double and a triple while plating two. Summer Butler had two hits, including a double and three RBIs. Emma Hubbert added a double as one of her two hits, and she scored twice.

Paislee James pitched four innings, allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out four Danville batters.

Later Friday, Russellville defeated Deshler 7-2.

Jenna Whitfield went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and scored three runs. Jaiden Calvert and Hubbert added two RBIs apiece for the Lady Golden Tigers.

Simpson pitched five innings. She struck out 12 and allowed two hits and three walks.

Saturday action got started for RHS with a 10-1 win over Waterloo. Simpson went 2-for-3, including a grand slam and five RBIs. Whitfield, Cox, Calvert and Natalie Nichols also had two hits each. Nichols had a triple, and Whitfield added a double.

Jacey Moore pitched all five innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out three.

RHS faced eventual tournament champion Rogers in the semifinals, and the Lady Pirates got the win by an 8-0 score.

Maddy Green had the only Russellville hit in the contest. Simpson pitched the first three frames, and James followed for an inning of scoreless relief.

Wilson 7, Russellville 4

The Lady Golden Tigers hosted Wilson March 9. Emma Campbell had three hits in as many at-bats, and Whitfield went 2-for-4. Cox, Green and Nichols also hit safely.

Simpson threw 119 pitches over seven innings. She gave up nine hits, struck out seven and walked three batters.

Russellville 6, Red Bay 1

RHS went to Red Bay March 11 and got the win.

Moore got the start in the circle and went five innings, allowing a run and two hits. She struck out seven and walked one before Simpson followed in relief.

Simpson worked two innings, allowing no runs or walks. She struck out four and gave up one hit.

Nichols had two hits, including a double, and she picked up two RBIs. Cox also had two hits, while Moore and Simpson also hit safely. Moore helped the RHS cause with two additional RBIs.
