Russellville High softball hosts camp for young players

Young softball players will have the chance to learn from two collegiate coaches Dec. 18 as Russellville hosts its Little Golden Tigers Softball Camp.

The camp is open to girls in second through sixth grade in Russellville and surrounding areas for $75. The camp will take place in the Russellville softball indoor facility Dec. 18 from noon to 4 p.m.

“This is a good opportunity for players to work with college and high school coaches to develop their softball knowledge and skills,” said RHS head softball coach Josh Graham.

The camp will be held by Mississippi State softball alum and former professional softball player Holly Ward as well as Jacksonville State University alum Sallie Beth Burch.

Registration will take place the day of camp at the softball facility. Payment will be due then, in the form of cash or check.

The camp is limited to the first 75 players. No skill level required to participate in camp.

Graham said during the camp players can expect to have hitting instruction, learn catching and throwing fundamentals and practice defensive skills. Any pitchers are encouraged to have someone to catch with them during defensive skills practice from 3-4 p.m.

Parents may stay and observe camp as long as social distancing protocols are followed.

Each player will need to bring a bat, glove, tennis shoes and a jacket in case instruction is outside. Masks will be required when social distancing is not possible.

Ward was a two-time state champion while at Haleyville High School and was the Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year. Burch was a two-time ACCC Champion and one-time national champion while at Wallace State Community College, and she was also two-time OVC champion and All OVC Conference while at Jacksonville State University.
