United Way of Northwest Alabama seeks new board members

While this year has been a challenge for all, United Way of Northwest Alabama has continued to provide services and support for those in need – and the local organization is in need of a few more pairs of helping hands.

United Way continues to partner and support 19 area non-profit agencies and provide direct services through 211 Information and Referral and the Success by 6 program. United Way has also extended services to include assistance to food pantries and individuals in need of rent and utility assistance and has provided grant opportunities for non-profit agencies in need because of the pandemic.

Several seats have become available on the United Way Board of Directors. United Way invites those interested in serving others and making an impact in the community to apply to join the board.

“United Way has been actively working to create a Board of Directors that mirrors our community in a more equitable manner,” said Terry Wicker, president of the board. “Our board strives to be an inclusive group of caring individuals and does not discriminate against potential members for any reason.”

Wicker said some areas of expertise United Way would love potential members to have include  legal expertise, human resources expertise, medical expertise and personal experience with a disability. People from diverse racial, cultural, gender and socio-economic backgrounds are also encouraged to apply.

While members of the board do not work within the day-to-day operations of United Way, potential board members should be interested in actively working as a team to create long-term solutions for the organization and the community as a whole.

They should be willing to help identify service gap areas and help strategize as to how to address those gaps.

Wick said a desire to create lasting change in the community is necessary to be an effective board member.

Those interested must be able to participate in bi-monthly meetings either in person or electronically. They must also participate on at least one organizational committee.

Members should also be willing to assist in fundraising efforts and attend any United Way events.
