Phil Campbell falls to Haleyville with 38-21 score

A quick glance at the stat sheet from Friday night might make someone think the Phil Campbell Bobcats either upset the Haleyville Lions or, at the least, gave them a close game.

Neither was the case, however, as the Lions beat the Bobcats 38-21.

Phil Campbell outgained Haleyville 249 yards to 216 yards and dominated the time of possession by an almost two-to-one margin, keeping the ball for a little more than 30 minutes of the game.

Haleyville got their homecoming game off to an exciting start, however, returning the opening kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown to take a quick 7-0 lead.

Phil Campbell responded immediately when Daniel Potts returned the ensuing kickoff 17 yards to the Bobcats’ 35yard line. Phil Campbell then went 65 yards on five plays, capped off by a 19-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Luke Barnwell.

Barnwell connected with Sage Raper on the two-point conversion to give Phil Campbell an 8-7 lead with 9:14 to go in the first quarter.

Haleyville regained the lead with a touchdown with 4:27 to go in the second quarter and then added a 36-yard field goal just before the half to take a 17-8 lead into the locker room.

Haleyville got two quick scores in the third quarter. The Lions took a 24-8 lead on a touchdown with 8:26 to go then capitalized on a Bobcat turnover to score again with 6:11 to go, taking a 31-8 lead.

Phil Campbell stopped the bleeding at the open of the fourth quarter with a seven-yard touchdown run by Barnwell – his second of the game – to cut the Lions’ lead to 31-14.

Haleyville added another score with 7:34 to go in the game, and Phil Campbell added a final touchdown with 1:46 to go in the game on a 20-yard pass from Barnwell to Potts.

The Bobcats will host Colbert Heights for homecoming Friday night.
