Lady Golden Tigers defeat Belgreen during busy week of volleyball action

Russellville High School’s varsity volleyball squad saw plenty of game action over the past few days, and team members are looking to build some momentum.

After struggling Sept. 5 against Deshler, West Morgan, East Limestone and Central, the Lady Golden Tigers faced off against a Franklin County rival, the Lady Bulldogs of Belgreen, at home Sept. 8. RHS defeated Belgreen 2-0 by scores of 25-16 and 25-20.

Caroline Sparks had three aces, nine kills, two blocks and four digs for Russellville. Jayna Poss added seven kills, and Leah Rushing had four aces and five digs. Abby Green picked up 18 assists and three digs, while Olivia Gann added eight digs for the Golden Tigers.

Errors were costly for Russellville in a loss earlier this season at Belgreen, and this time around, the Lady Golden Tigers cleaned things up in that part of their game. “We had 35 errors the last time that we played them, and this time, we had less than 15, so that’s a lot better,” said Russellville head coach Whitney Glover.

Going forward, Glover said she’s looking for her team to “just continue to stay positive and cheer each other on,” she said.

Russellville also dropped a match to Hatton Sept. 8 2-0, and the game scores were 25-21 in both sets. Green had 13 assists, three digs and a block, while Sparks picked up six kills. Anna Beth Oliver had four kills, while Rushing had six digs and Jenna Whitfield had five.

The Lady Golden Tigers had a busy day in Elkmont Sept. 12, finishing first in pool play.

Russellville took down Lauderdale County 2-0 to start things off by scores of 25-21 and 25-17. Green had 19 assists and five digs; Poss added seven kills and six digs; and Rushing helped out with 15 digs. Oliver had six kills and four blocks, while Whitfield added 10 digs. Sparks rounded out the statistics with nine kills, five aces and five digs.

Against Tanner, RHS won 2-1 by scores of 23-25, 25-15 and 15-10. Green had two kills, four aces, 26 assists and 10 digs. Poss had five kills, while Whitfield had two kills and eight digs. Rushing helped the cause with 19 digs, while Sparks had 17 kills and five digs.

Lauderdale County came back to defeat RHS 2-0 by scores of 27-25 and 25-20 to finish up the day for the Lady Golden Tigers. Green had 24 assists, two kills, three aces and eight digs. Poss had six kills, two blocks and four digs, while Oliver had five kills. Ashlyn DeArman picked up eight digs, while Rushing had 12. Sparks had 14 kills, two blocks and three digs; Whitfield picked up eight digs; and Gann had five.
