The end of summer usually means a return to club meetings and the kick off of a new club year; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has hindered clubs in their efforts to maintain engagement during this unprecedented time when many clubs have reduced in-person meetings, projects or social events.

Some clubs have been creative through the use of technology as a tool for engaging members. Social media and virtual meeting experiences for club members have been used until groups can resume in-person meetings and events.

Recently, officers of GFWC Book Lovers Study Club met to make plans for the club members this year. The meeting was held at President Patricia Cox’s lake home on Cedar Creek. Book Lovers members have not met since March when the safer-at-home restrictions were issued.

An informal installation of the 2020-2022 officers was held. New officers are Patricia Cox, president; Nina McNatt, first vice president; Anna Carol Porter, recording secretary; Cindy Bailey, corresponding secretary; Lea Masterson, treasurer; Susie Hovater Malone, historian; and Cheri McCain, parliamentary adviser.

To maintain social distancing, the officers decided meetings will be held either in person at churches or through emails, Zoom or a combination until the pandemic subsides. Decisions for each meeting will be made on the basis of protecting our members’ health and safety.

All committees and project leaders will be informed and streamline communications regarding any changes in meetings to minimize confusion to members.

“Living the Volunteer Spirit—Empowering Others to Live Well” is the AFWC theme, and the state project is diabetes awareness. Book Lovers’ projects will continue to be the Breast Cancer Walk and to establish and support ESO for book study and discussion.

Book Lovers Study Club will continue to support the GFWC Mission Statement: GFWC is an international women’s organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.

This year will be challenging, but with everyone working together, clubs can continue their volunteerism in making community improvements as well as making a difference in the lives of others.
