RHS alum makes Auburn University baseball all-decade team

Former Russellville High School standout Cody Greenhill was recently voted as one of 18 members of the Auburn University all-decade baseball team.

Fans were asked to vote online, choosing from a group of candidates at each position. The eligible athletes played at AU at any time during the 10-year period of 2010-19.

The team was officially announced May 29 after a few days of voting.

Greenhill finished his junior year on The Plains in 2020, and the right-hander was chosen as a relief pitcher for his work during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. During that time, he had an 8-6 record with a 2.87 ERA while striking out 99 batters and picking up 17 saves.

The all-decade honors come after Greenhill was also voted as a Freshman All-American and part of the SEC All-Freshman team in 2018.

Two relievers were named to the all-decade team, and Austin Hubbard’s 2010 season earned him the other spot. He was 6-2 for the Tigers that year, with a 2.44 era and 10 saves.

A number of familiar names join Greenhill on the all-decade roster. Current teammate Tanner Burns, of Decatur, is one of four starting pitchers on the squad. Burns has already earned All-American honors. Each of the four all-decade starters have been drafted by Major League Baseball organizations. Joining Burns are former No. 1 draft pick of the Detroit Tigers Casey Mize of Springville, current Atlanta Braves pitcher Grant Dayton and Keegan Thompson of Cullman.

Blake Logan, of Muscle Shoals, was voted as the team’s catcher. Logan was behind the plate for the Tigers from 2014-17, and he had a batting average of .262.

Garrett Cooper is one of two first basemen. Cooper played at Auburn during the 2012 and 2013 seasons before making it to the big leagues with the New York Yankees in 2017.

Hunter Morris had a big year at first base in 2010, and the Huntsville native and Grissom graduate hit .386 with 23 home runs and was SEC Player of the Year.

Another current Auburn Tiger was named as the team’s second baseman. Ryan Bliss hit .281 on the 2019 team that made it to the College World Series in Omaha.

Rounding out the infield are third baseman Dan Gamache and shortstop Casey McElroy, teammates on the 2010-11 squads.

Four outfielders made the cut, with Brian Fletcher using a strong 2010 season to make the team. He hit .357 with 22 home runs that year, and his teammate, Trent Mummey hit .366 with 17 homers that same season.

Anfernee Grier was a draft pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and he hit .323 from 2014-16 at Auburn. Jonah Todd also made all-decade with a .376 average in 2017.

Canadian Edouard Julien was a popular member of the Auburn team for two years starting in 2018, and he is the designated hitter on the squad. Finally, Jordan Ebert of Foley is the team’s utility player. He hit .314 from 2013-16.

Greenhill was a four-year letter winner and three-time 5A state champion for RHS Coach Chris Heaps. He was rated the eighth best player and fourth best right-handed pitcher in Alabama by Perfect Game and was ranked a top 160 player nationally. He hit .336 with 16 home runs his senior year and led the state with 144 strikeouts and 18 walks.

He is the son of Kevin and Melissa Greenhill and is a forestry and wildlife management major at Auburn.
