Hodges Equestrian Park hosts youth horse camp March 21

When Hodges Equestrian Park came under new management last year, the park was re-invigorated with a love for horses and a will to share that love. March 21 the park will open its gates to young riders of all skill levels for the first-ever Hodges Horse Camp.

There will be two age groups – ages 4-8 and ages 9 and older – each with 20 available spots. Horses will be provided, and the $35 fee per child will include lunch.

“I had been to horse camps when I was little, and I always loved it,” said camp instructor Shelby Harris. “We thought this would be a great way to get people coming back to the park.”

The 4-8 age group will enjoy activities from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and the 9 and older group will meet from 2:30-7:30 p.m.

No horse experience is necessary to attend the camp. The camp will include horse games, crafts, roping, basic horse care and riding.

Each camp session will be led by one instructor and six helpers. The majority of camp will take place at the arena and the pavilion. Parents are welcome to stay at the park while their child attends camp if they would like.

There will also be a horse fashion show that night, where the horses will be dressed in costumes and with finger paint for the young riders to demonstrate what they have learned for their parents.

Harris said she is excited for the camp and to spread her love of horses with children.
