Softball: RHS girls face stiff competition to start season

Russellville 15, Smithville (Miss.) 0

The Lady Golden Tigers got the 2020 season off to a winning start with a dominating victory over Smithville at Northeast Mississippi Community College. It was new head coach Josh Graham’s first game at RHS.

Krista Sikes got the start in the circle, and she pitched five of the game’s six innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven. Kailee Simpson finished the contest by striking out two and allowing no hits.

Autumn Logan hit a home run for RHS, and she went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including two doubles, and she scored two runs. Chalea Clemmons also had a big day with the bat, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. She also had two doubles and a stolen base.

Jenna Whitfield added two hits and an RBI, while Tori Tiffin had two RBIs and two walks. Alivia Clemmons had a triple and three RBIs, while Madison Murray and Fallin Cox also had hits.

Auburn 10, Russellville 0

RHS traveled to Auburn High School Feb. 21 and dropped a game to the 7A Tigers. Russellville was outhit in the contest by a 5-1 total.

Chalea Clemmons got the lone Russellville hit. She also was the starting pitcher, going two innings and allowing nine runs, with five of them being earned.

Kailee Simpson also pitched two innings, and she allowed one run on one hit while throwing 27 pitches.

Sparkman 8, Russellville 2

7A Sparkman was the opponent for the Lady Golden Tigers Feb. 22 in Russellville’s first game of the Sidney Cooper Invitational at South Commons in Columbus, GA.

Russellville had three hits, with AJ Taylor getting a double and Logan and Cox adding a single apiece.

Cox had the only RBI for RHS. Sikes pitched all four innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits. She struck out six and walked four batters.

Tallassee 6, Russellville 5

Russellville’s second game Saturday in the Sidney Cooper Invitational was a contest against the 5A Tallassee Tigers.

Tori Tiffin went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Murray and Chalea Clemmons had two hits each. Alivia Clemmons, Logan and Makala O’Neal added the other RHS hits.

Tiffin pitched 8.1 innings, throwing 112 pitches. She struck out two, allowing one earned run on five hits in the game.

Russellville 5, Beulah 4

The Lady Golden Tigers wrapped play Feb. 22 with a victory over the 3A Beulah Bobcats of Valley.

Logan went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Russellville. Chalea Clemmons and Taylor had two hits apiece, with Clemmons hitting a home run. Alivia Clemmons, Jenna Whitfield and Maddy Green added the other RHS hits.

Simpson pitched the game, and she struck out 10 batters and walked two. Simpson threw 92 pitches and allowed two earned runs on four hits to get the RHS win.
