Tharptown teams get easy wins over Colbert Heights

The Tharptown Lady Wildcats easily defeated the Colbert Heights Wildcats Nov. 19, 53-32.

Three players reached double figures for Tharptown: Shaylee Wieting with 18 points, Brooke Daily with 16 points and Gracie Montgomery with 11 points.

Tharptown outscored Colbert Heights in each of the four quarters of the game. Tharptown led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and 31-21 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Tharptown had pulled away to a 42-26 lead.

Rounding out the Wildcats’ scoring were Adrianna Borden with five points and Aly Vandiver with three points.

Daily and Wieting also led Tharptown defensively. Daily had eight rebounds, six of which were on the offensive boards. Wieting had six steals.

BOYS

When Tharptown’s leading scorer, Winston Nolen, went to the bench with foul trouble early in the second quarter, senior forward Edward Lopez took over.

Lopez scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the second quarter, helping propel Tharptown past Colbert Heights 56-43.

Lopez had five steals and went six of nine from the field.

“When Edward decides to play, he is hard to guard one-on-one,” said Tharptown coach Shannon Benford. “This was a big win for our team … We’ve had two rough road games to open up with, and it was good to get home and get this win.”

Tharptown held Colbert Heights scoreless for much of the first quarter, but Colbert Heights made a late run, leaving Tharptown with a 12-8 lead.

The Wildcat boys extended their lead to 25-20 by halftime and led Colbert Heights 39-32 at the end of the third quarter.

Nolen scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter to help Tharptown solidify the lead and get the win.

Colton Simmons had 12 points and eight rebounds. Edwin Garcia hit three three-pointers and

scored 11 points. Tyler Amos had four points.

Tharptown falls in area opener

The Tharptown Wildcats let a 10-point halftime lead slip away in a 62-51 loss to the Tanner Rattlers Nov. 22.

Tharptown hit nine three-pointers in the first half, building a 33-23 halftime lead.

Tanner, however, went on a 10-0 run in the first two minutes of the second half to tie the game at 33-33. The Rattlers’ run extended to 18-0 to take a 41-33 lead.

Tanner would not relinquish the lead.

Nolen had a season-high 24 points, hitting five three-pointers and pulling down seven rebounds.

Garcia followed Nolen with 10 points. Simmons and Ruben Alfaro scored six points each. Yovani Gomez added three points.
