CCHS Wildcats’ field goal in OT beats Bobcats

The Colbert Heights Wildcats got a second chance at an overtime win against the Phil Campbell Bobcats – and took full advantage of it.

After stopping Phil Campbell on their first overtime possession, the Wildcats faced a fourth-and-goal with the game on the line. Colbert Heights lined up to kick the game-winning field goal, but the Bobcats blocked the kick, expecting the game to go to a second overtime.

The officials, however, ruled an inadvertent whistle, giving the Wildcats another chance. This time, they made good.

It was a close call, though, with the ball bouncing off the crossbar through the goal posts for the 31-28 win.

Colbert Heights scored first on a three-yard run to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 8:59 to go in the first quarter.

Phil Campbell responded quickly with a 69-yard touchdown pass from Luke Barnwell to Ridge Raper. Abraham Gonzales added the point after to tie the game 7-7 with 7:51 to go in the opening quarter.

Colbert Heights reclaimed the lead with 2:30 to go in the quarter on a 32-yard run to make it 14-7.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 21-7 in the second quarter on a three-yard run.

Phil Campbell cut into Colbert Heights’ lead with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Barnwell to Trey Leindecker to make the score 21-14.

Colbert Heights regained the momentum late in the half on a 17-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats a 28-14 halftime lead.

Phil Campbell dominated the scoring in the second half with a touchdown in the third and fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.

The third-quarter score came on the opening play of the quarter, when Leindecker split a couple of defenders and outran the Colbert Heights secondary 61 yards to paydirt to make the score 28-21.

Phil Campbell tied the game in the fourth quarter on a seven-yard run by Barnwell to send the game into overtime.

Phil Campbell had 380 yards of total offense to Colbert Heights’ 372 yards.

Barnwell completed 14 of 18 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Leindecker had 17 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown. Ridge Raper got nine catches for 173 yards and a

score.

The Bobcats will close out their season Thursday night when they host rival Hackleburg at 7 p.m.
