Food Network Star finalist speaks to Book Lovers Club

The GFWC-AFWC Book Lovers Study Club kicked off the year with an outstanding program presented by Trace Barnett. He is best known for being a finalist on Food Network Star and Comeback Kitchen, as well as appearing regularly on several television shows.

Trace earned a degree in food and nutrition from the University of Alabama in 2012. The motto for Barnett’s blog is “Fresh Ideas in a Swanky Southern Way,” and it features seasonal recipes, DIY projects, entertaining ideas and gardening tips that are designed for a tight budget and a hectic schedule.

His new book, “Tracing Roots,” features recipes with an Appalachian flair unique to Alabama. Barnett said he designed recipes that allow readers to entertain their guests without breaking the bank.

The book divides its recipes into seasons, and the recipes emphasize using ingredients that grow to their peak in each season. Readers can flip through the book and find scrumptious recipes made from ingredients that are readily available.

The September meeting was held in the RHS Media Center, with Ponda Gordon and Nina McNatt serving as co-hostesses. The yearbook’s cover featured the theme “Hat-titude and Gratitude – Living the Volunteer Spirit.”

A silent auction was held to raise money for the scholarship fund.

Hayley Fuller presented the club’s proposed budget for the year, which included donations to the AFWC President Project–Scholarship Fund, Girls’ FAME Ranch, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, breast cancer efforts and community projects.

President Patricia Cox presented information on the upcoming Second Annual Book Lovers Study Club’s Fun Walk. Walk the Road to Wellness will be held Oct. 26 at the RHS Field House and Track. Registration is $20 and will be held from 8:30-9 a.m., with the walk beginning at 9 a.m. The first 100 participants will receive a T-shirt.

Through the generosity of our sponsors and walk participants, Book Lovers Club has been able to support UAB’s Walking the Road to Wellness Program, the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life and most importantly the women of Franklin County who are walking their road to wellness as they fight their diagnosis of breast cancer.

Preliminary plans for the annual Christmas Holiday Tour of Homes were discussed. The tour will be held Dec. 15.
