July Fest draws community to Vina

The 29th annual Vina July Fest went off without a hitch as community members gathered at the Vina Fire Department July 27 for a day of family fun to raise money for the Vina Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

Vina Fire Chief Michael Moomaw said he was happy with how the event turned out this year because of the community support.

“It really just seemed like a steady flow of people there all day,” Moomaw said.

One of the biggest attractions of July Fest is the Draw Down, when those who entered have a chance to win $17,000.

This year’s winners were Betty Mahan and Ann Green, the final two names left in the Draw Down, who decided to split the money.

Another crowd pleaser at July Fest is the car show. Town clerk Sue Raper said this year there were a record number 62 people who entered the car show. Raper said the previous record was 51 people.

Gary and Becky Pennington took home three titles from the car show: best paint, best interior and best engine.

Michelle Tunnelf won for People’s Choice, and Gary Raper won People’s Choice in the Rat-Rod division.

Kirby Correll left with the grand cash prize of $500, with two winners receiving $50 and 20 people winning $20.

Moomaw said he will not find out how much money the event raised until the first meeting of August, when the president and treasurer announce the fundraiser results.
