FCSO cracks down on drug cases

Recent arrests have brought two people suspected of drug crimes in Franklin County into custody.

April 30 Darius Freeman of Florence was arrested at 705 Lombardy Street in Florence by the United States Marshal Service Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, along with Franklin County Sheriff’s Office investigators and Alabama State Drug Task Force Officers.

The arrest was a result of an extensive drug trafficking investigation conducted by the FCSO and the Alabama Region E Drug Enforcement Task Force, involving heroin. According to the FCSO, the investigation resulted in arrest warrants for Freeman on the alleged offenses of distribution of heroin and trafficking heroin – offenses that occurred in Franklin County.

Freeman also was found to have additional felony arrest warrants in Franklin and Colbert counties for prior charges.

At the time of the report, Freeman was still in custody at the Franklin County Jail, pending court appearances.

In a separate case, May 6 Shamon Stutts of Russellville was taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies after an investigation into attempted smuggling of illegal drugs into the Franklin County Jail. Sheriff’s office staff intercepted illegal narcotics Stutts allegedly attempted to pass to inmates who were incarcerated in the facility.

An investigation was launched, and investigators obtained warrants for Stutts’ arrest for promoting prison contraband (drugs) and possession of controlled substances.

Stutts was also found to have additional arrest warrants in Franklin County and was booked into the jail as well for manufacturing of a controlled substance, first degree, according to the FCSO.

At the time of the report, Stutts was in custody at the Franklin County Jail, awaiting court appearances.
