Softball regionals begin this weekend

Four Franklin County teams will begin their quests for a state title this week in the softball regionals.

Belgreen (25-12) will play Coosa Christian at noon May 9 in the Class 1A Central Region in Tuscaloosa.

“Everything up until now has been preparation for what we are about to play,” said Belgreen Coach John Smith.  “There is no room for error, leaving runners in scoring position or base-running mistakes. Two losses, and we are done. So, play hard and do your best, and whatever happens, happens!”

Red Bay and Tharptown will be in the Class 2A North Region in Florence.

Red Bay (23-10) will play Winston County May 10 at 3 p.m.

“It’s amazing what these girls accomplished to get here,” said Red Bay Coach Shane Nichols. “To come out of the elimination bracket and beat a good Tharptown team twice to win says a lot about how our girls faced adversity and overcame it. We have to commit to that same level of play in the regionals.”

Tharptown (24-14) will play Hatton May 10 at 3 p.m.

“The girls have been playing hard and working harder,” said Tharptown Coach Susie Tverberg. “We will take that mentality into the tournament with us and do what works best for us as a team. We are excited to be playing in Florence. After all their hard work, they deserve this.”

Russellville will play Brewer at noon May 10 in the Class 5A North Region in Florence.

“The girls are really coming together at the right time,” said Russellville Coach Kathryn Montgomery. “They believe in each other and their mission. They know they are capable of great things, and they know what it will take to reach their full potential. They have their sights set high, and they sure don’t aim to miss.”
