PC gets six-win week

The Phil Campbell Bobcats baseball team had a great week last week, winning six games, including a three-game sweep of the East Lawrence Eagles in an area matchup.

Phil Campbell won games one and two of the East Lawrence series without much resistance, 14-3 and 9-4. The Eagles took the Bobcats into extra innings in game three, but Phil Campbell came out on top, 8-7.

Phil Campbell jumped on East Lawrence’s pitching right off the bat in game one of the series, racing out to a 14-1 lead after four innings and piling up 13 hits. The Bobcats had eight extra base hits, including five doubles from Rilan Garrison, Ridge Raper, Brett Saint, Mason Swinney and Austen Baker and three triples from Cole Motes, Trey Leindecker and Luke Barnwell.

Nate Owens led the Bobcats, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Owens took the mound for Phil Campbell, pitching a complete game, striking out six and giving up no earned runs and four hits.

In game two, Phil Campbell survived a second inning scare giving up three runs to East Lawrence. The Bobcats rallied to score three in the third and five in the fourth to beat the Eagles 9-4.

The big third inning was sparked by an RBI-double by Garrison, an RBI-triple by Raper and an RBI-single by Baker.

Raper and Garrison also sparked Phil Campbell’s five-run fourth. Owens scored three runs.

Raper had three hits and three RBIs and scored three runs. He also pitched six innings, struck out 11 East Lawrence batters, allowed no earned runs and gave up six hits.

In game three of the series, Garrison scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning to break a 7-7 tie and help the Bobcats sweep the Eagles. East Lawrence led Phil Campbell 6-3 after three innings, but the Bobcats scored two in the fifth and then one each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Owens had two RBIs and two hits. Leindecker had two hits and an RBI and scored a run.

Brett Saint came in to relieve a struggling Cole Motes. Saint closed out the last six innings, of the game striking out five batters and allowing no earned runs and just three hits.

In other action last week, Phil Campbell steamrolled Winston County 20-6, thanks in part to a big day at the plate for Owens. Owens went 3-for-4, with a double, a home run, five RBIs and four runs.

Phil Campbell shut out Red Bay 8-0 Saturday. Baker pitched the shutout, striking out nine batters and giving up five hits. At the plate, Luke Barnwell had two hits and two RBIs and scored two runs. Ty Leindecker also knocked two batters in.

The Bobcats also beat Belmont (Miss.) Saturday, 14-2. Trey Leindecker hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. Baker went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and scored two runs. Owens had three RBIs and scored two runs.
