RHS soccer teams grab home wins

The Russellville High School varsity soccer teams continued their 2019 season with a couple of home area wins over the Hamilton Aggies.

The games were the first in the history of the Hamilton program. The RHS girls took a 2-0 win over Hamilton, and the boys followed with a 10-0 victory – with eight goals coming in the second half.

With the victories, both RHS squads improved their area records to 2-0 on the season.

In the girls’ game, Russellville led 1-0 at halftime, with RHS keeping possession of the ball for most of the half. Briana Ramirez was the goal keeper for Russellville, and Hannah McDaniel was the keeper for Hamilton. McDaniel faced many shots, and Ashly Garcia found a way to get one past her for a goal to give RHS a 1-0 first half lead. Kathy Sanchez also had a couple of nice scoring attempts in the half, with one shot hitting the post.

Juana Juarez displayed good skill in the game for RHS, and she was rewarded with a second half goal to make the score 2-0 after McDaniel had a save on a free kick by Juarez earlier in the half.

In the boys’ game, Russellville got three goals from Andreas Campos and two each by Esvin Mateo and Juan Cano. Vincente Machic, David Baltazar and Pablo Tristan all had one goal each in the match for RHS.

Daniel Martinez got the start as goal keeper for Russellville, and Julio Lopez also got into the game as keeper about halfway through the second half.

“We pushed Andreas Campos to the top to play striker now,” Russellville head coach Trey Stanford said. “We put him up there in the second half of the Madison Academy game, and he scored three goals in that game in the second half. We realized that we had something special there because his speed is outrageous. They feed off of that, and the team feeds off of his goals.”
