Tharptown girls get win to open season

The Tharptown Wildcats jumped out to a four-run lead in the sixth inning and held on to defeat the Addison Bulldogs 6-5 in the season opener.

Tharptown scored three runs in the first inning on poor pitching and fielding by the Bulldogs. Addison cut Tharptown’s lead to 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning. The Wildcats extended their lead to 5-2 in the top of the third inning on singles by Olivia Ergle and Leslie Staggs. Tharptown added one more in the top of the sixth inning when Shaylee Wieting stole home.

Tharptown got eight hits and walked seven times in the victory. Wieting, Taylor Cameron and Ergle all had two hits each. Wieting also scored two runs and had four stolen bases.

Ergle struck out 10 batters, allowing five runs on five hits.

Tharptown 3, West Morgan 0

Taylor Cameron pitched a complete game shutout against the West Morgan Rebels Saturday, for a 3-0 win for the Lady Wildcats.

Cameron struck out 11 batters and allowed only one hit.

Brooke Daily led at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Ergle had two RBIs.

Tharptown got its first run in the top of the second when Daily scored a on a fielder’s choice. The Wildcats scored two more in the bottom of the third inning. Wieting scored on a throwing error, and Ergle doubled in Daily, who reached on a bunt.

Tharptown 2, West Limestone 1

Tharptown scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to come from behind and beat West Limestone 2-1.

West Limestone picked up its only run in the top of the third inning and led the rest of the way until the Wildcats broke through in the bottom of the fifth.

Madison Vandiver tied the game, scoring on an error by the pitcher. Macy Petree scored the game-winning run on a bunt single by Wieting.

Wieting led at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Vandiver had a single and a walk and scored a run.

Cameron pitched a complete game, allowing one hit and one run while striking out five.

Madison County 8, Tharptown 5

One big inning for Madison County was all that was needed to beat Tharptown Saturday, 8-5.

Tharptown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a three-run homer by Ergle, but Madison County scored eight runs in the bottom of the second to take an 8-3 lead.

Tharptown scored two in the top of the third inning: Wieting scored on a fielder’s choice, and Brooke Daily scored on a single by Catie Dawson.

Daily went 2-for-2, including a double, and scored two runs.
