Court sentences Jason Green to prison

Jason Green, 43, was sentenced for manslaughter Feb. 25.

A jury found Green guilty of manslaughter earlier this year for assisting his girlfriend Shay Nicole Ledlow with her suicide in 2011. Judge Terry Dempsey sentenced Green to 20 years in prison for the manslaughter charge.

According to district attorney Joey Rushing, Green pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter as part of a settlement in February 2015 and was sentenced to 19 years. In 2017 Green appealed his case on the basis of ineffective counsel and sought to have his conviction set aside to instead proceed with a trial.

The judge granted him the Rule 32 petition; he received a new attorney; and the trial took place Jan. 14-29 of this year.

The jury also found Green guilty of possession of marijuana, second degree, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Dempsey sentenced him to serve the two drug offenses concurrently.

Since Green has already served time in prison, he has received credit for that time served that will apply to his new sentencing.

Green requested an appeal bond, but Rushing argued he was a danger to the community and to others. “When someone is given a 20-year sentence or less, they can be given an appeal bond, which is up to the court’s discretion,” Rushing said.

Dempsey agreed with Rushing’s argument and denied Green an appeal bond. He also denied Green probation.
