Club Chronicles: Arts Council volunteers keep Historic Roxy going

If you want something done, get a busy person to do it!

That’s an old adage but one that is true most of the time. For example, the Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council consists of 12 individuals who dedicate their time to oversee the continued operations of the Historic Roxy Theatre. These individuals not only volunteer but have full-time jobs or own their own business. Some are retired and have other activities and interests and serve on various boards – but they all make time to support the Arts Council and the Roxy Theatre.

The council’s goal is to provide a venue for local talent to perform as well as sponsor entertainment and other wholesome programs the entire family can enjoy. The restoration of the Roxy has not only enhanced the beauty of downtown Russellville but has increased tourism to the area and adds to the local economy. The Historic Roxy Theatre has been designated as one of the top 10 historic theatres in Alabama.

Each month the Kerry Gilbert Band and guest perform the second Saturday night at the Roxy. Their next program will be March 9 with guest Billy Lawson. Lawson is an accomplished songwriter/producer and owner of Wishbone Studios in Muscle Shoals. Tickets may be purchased at the door or on eventbrite.com.

The legendary Ronnie McDowell will present a fundraising concert March 16 at the Roxy. This year marks the 26th year for McDowell to perform in Russellville. His string of hit songs, stage presence and genuine personality fill the seats again and again. McDowell is also an accomplished painter, and many of his prints will be available.

The opening act for Ronnie McDowell will be Joseph Baldwin. Joseph won the Alabama Year of Music Songwriters Contest for his song, “I’m Alabama.”

This will be an outstanding concert, and you may purchase your tickets from any Arts Council member or call 256-415-3270.

People come from surrounding states for these shows, so join in on some great entertainment right here in Russellville. You don’t have to travel far. And if you can’t arrange your schedule to volunteer for the Roxy, support us through your attendance.
