Tharptown girls beat Vina on last-second shot
Shaylee Wieting scored 26 points, including a game-winning layup, after stealing an in-bounds pass to beat the Vina Red Devils 63-61 last week.
Tharptown led Vina 14-12 at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Red Devils 17-6 in the second quarter to take a 31-18 halftime lead. Vina came storming back in the third quarter, outscoring Tharptown 22-15 to cut the Wildcats lead to 46-40 leading into the fourth quarter.
Vina continued the comeback pursuit in the fourth quarter by taking a four-point lead, but a couple of turnovers down the stretch proved costly to the Red Devils.
Adriana Borden followed Wieting in the scoring column with 12 points. Gracie Montgomery, Brooke Daily and Catie Dawson scored eight points each. Macy Petree pitched in one point in the win.
Rayleigh Guin led Vina with 24 points, followed by Kaitlyn King with 15 points. Sara Scott and Emma Humphres added eight points each. Sarah Johnson scored five points and Abbie Petree one point.
Tharptown 49, Hackleburg 19
Borden scored 14 points to lead the Tharptown Wildcats past the Hackleburg Panthers 49-18 last week.
Tharptown jumped out to a big 14-2 lead in the first quarter. The Panthers clawed their way back into the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 12-7. Tharptown led 21-14 at the break.
The Wildcats held Hackleburg to six second-half points to lock down the game.
Brooke Daily added nine points for Tharptown. Wieting scored eight points, Macy Petree six points, Gracie Montgomery five points, Aly Vandiver five points and Catie Dawson two points.
Boys
Hackleburg 78, Tharptown 65
For the second time in a week the Tharptown Wildcats had no answer for Kaleb Moore, who scored 40 points in a 78-65 win over the Tharptown Wildcats.
Hackleburg led Tharptown 22-18 at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 36-31 at halftime. The Panthers extended their lead even further in the third quarter to 57-44.
Tharptown made eight of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to try to close the game, but the Panthers held on for the win.
Winston Nolen led Tharptown with 17 points. Hayden Moss and Colton Simmons scored 14 points each. Edward Lopez added 10 points. Carson Petree finished the game with six points and Les Montgomery grabbed four points.
Tharptown 71, Vina 55
Nolen scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead the Tharptown Wildcats to a 71-55 win over the Vina Red Devils last week.
Montgomery scored nine points to help Tharptown jump out to a 22-10 first quarter lead. Vina came storming back in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 23-13 to cut the Tharptown’s lead to 35-33 at halftime. Tharptown outpaced Vina in the third quarter 14-12 and was still in the game trailing 49-45 going into the fourth quarter. The Wildcats stepped up the defensive pressure in the final period to outscore Vina 22-10 and close out the game.
Simmons followed Nolen with 19 points. Montgomery added 13 points, and Hayden Moss had 10 points. Lopez added four points and Ruben Alfaro three points.
Jackson Landers and Timmy Newell led Vina with 13 points and 12 points respectively. Moomaw and Weatherford scored seven points each, and Miller and Pardue had five points each. Whitfield finished the game with four points and Ashley two points.
Hackleburg 64, Tharptown 53
Kaleb Moore scored 29 of Hackleburg’s 44 second-half points to lead the Panthers past the Tharptown Wildcats 64-53 last week.
Tharptown led Hackleburg 10-8 at the end of the first quarter and 25-20 at halftime. Moore and the Panthers got hot in the third quarter, outscoring Tharptown 22-15. Moore had 19 of the Panthers’ 22 third-quarter points. Hackleburg outscored Tharptown 22-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the home win.
Nolen led Tharptown with 22 points. Moss added 11 points and Lopez 10 points. Petree finished the game with six points and Simmons with four points.
