Tharptown gets win in Flame Invitational
Four players scored in double figures to help lead the Tharptown Wildcats to a 76-66 come-from-behind victory over the Phillips Bears in the opening game of the Flame Invitational at Shoals Christian School.
Colton Simmons had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats. Edward Lopez followed with 18 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Lopez scored 14 of his points in the second half.
Hayden Moss scored 17 points and five three-pointers, with 12 of his points in the first half of the game. Winston Nolen scored 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half.
Phillips led Tharptown 18-17 at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 39-33 at halftime. Tharptown outscored Phillips 43-27 in the second half to get the win.
Les Montgomery and Tristan Brasuell contributed thee points each.
Shoals Christian 46, Tharptown 44
Jaylen Akin got hot in the third quarter for Shoals Christian, and that was all it would take for the Flame to squeak out a 46-44 win over Tharptown.
Neither team could score in the first quarter, with the game tied 5-5 at the end of the period. Tharptown took an 18-15 lead at halftime, but Shoals Christian’s Akin hit four three-pointers and scored 16 points in the third quarter to help the Flame take a 38-30 lead into the fourth quarter. Tharptown came back and took a two-point lead in the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on to the win.
Nolen led Tharptown with 19 points and was followed by Colton Simmons with 13 points. Lopez added seven points, Moss three points and Ruben Alfaro two points.
Wilson 67, Tharptown 57
Nolen drained 30 points and hit six three-pointers for Tharptown, but it wasn’t enough for the Wildcats to overcome the hot-shooting Wilson Warriors, as they lost 67-57. Wilson hit 10 three-pointers in the game and also got six threes from one player.
Wilson led Tharptown 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 37-25 at halftime. Tharptown outscored Wilson 32-30 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 12-point halftime deficit.
Simmons and Lopez added 11 points each. Moss contributed three points and Montgomery two points.
