Meet the Tigers kick-off event presents RHS athletes to fan base

By Brannon King / For the FCT

Supporters of Russellville City Schools got a chance to get to know the current student-athletes and band members who will be taking the fields and courts on campus for the 2018-19 school year – while also getting another opportunity to watch Golden Tiger football players of the past relive their glory days – during the Meet the Tigers event at RHS stadium Aug. 10.

By all accounts, the event was a big hit with those in the stands as well as those participating. It was a festival-type atmosphere, with concessions – including the always-popular Russellville Dogs – available for purchase. The youngest Tiger fans were able to see some of their heroes while also meeting Champ, the Golden Tiger mascot, who was on hand along with the cheerleaders.

Children were also able to jump around in a bounce house that was set up on the playing surface just outside of one end zone.

The alumni football game was scheduled for four quarters but was cut a bit short because of heavy rain that sent fans and players scurrying for cover during the final period.

The teams of alumni were split into two squads, one wearing black jerseys and the other in gold. At the half, the black jersey team held a 21-14 lead, and when the game was called when the skies opened, the Gold trailed 42-21.

Many current RHS athletes in various sports were in attendance, along with the Marching Hundred. Students were introduced to the crowd throughout the night.

New RHS head football coach John Ritter said he was pleased with how the event was received by the community.

“I thought it was excellent,” Ritter said. “We had 25 guys playing in the game, and from what everybody said, this is one of the biggest crowds that has been at this thing. It was a huge success.”

Another head coach who will be getting the regular season started soon is volleyball coach Whitney Glover. She said her squad has been working hard to prepare for the season that will start in late August.

“I’m really pleased with it,” Glover said of the Meet the Tigers event. “I’m proud of them and really excited to get the season started. I think this is a great way to recognize them, and maybe people will recognize what we’re trying to do and start coming out to some of our games.”
