Bicentennial Committee encourages public to dress up for Pioneer Day
Franklin County’s Pioneer Day Bicentennial Event is just a few weeks away, and preparations for the celebration are in full swing. As the Bicentennial Committee and other volunteers get the activities and performances ready for the event, they are also planning their costumes – and are hoping others will do the same.
To go along with the pioneer theme, members of the committee and other volunteers will be dressed up in traditional pioneer garb, including aprons and bonnets. They are encouraging the public to come dressed up in pioneer-style clothing as well.
“It’s not required, but it’s fun and will add to the event,” said Doris Hutcheson, a main organizer of the event.
Franklin County native Diane Baggett is helping make aprons and bonnets for those who need them for Pioneer Day. Baggett has been sewing since she was a child and said she enjoys pioneer-themed events.
April 10 she set up shop at the Franklin County Archives to help those who were interested figure out what kind of apron and bonnet they would like for the event. She had many different fabric, color and design options.
Baggett will be at the archives again April 19 from 10 a.m. to noon to help people with their costume choices.
Bonnets and aprons will also be available for purchase at Pioneer Day, which is May 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the east side of Sloss Lake on Highway 24.
