Bulldog battle: Belgreen gets big homecoming wins

Varsity Boys

After a slow start against the Sheffield Bulldogs, the Belgreen Bulldogs raced ahead for a 73-56 homecoming win.

Sheffield led Belgreen 20-14 at the end of the first period of play. Belgreen outscored Sheffield 22-12 in the second quarter to take a 36-32 halftime lead. Belgreen continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring Sheffield 17-7 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 53-19.

Mason Bragwell led the Bulldogs with a 23-point performance. Brant Bragwell followed with 19 points, and Jacob Mayberry with 14 points. Payton Scott had five points, and Jake Taylor scored four points. Eli Hiser and Seth Taylor finished with three points each. Gaven Taylor scored two points.

The boys also claimed a 70-53 win over the Colbert County Indians in recent basketball action. Mason Bragwell was top scorer with 23. Brant Bragwell followed with 18.

Varsity Girls

In varsity girls action, the Belgreen Bulldogs wasted no time putting the Sheffield Bulldogs away, taking a 22-6 first-quarter lead. Belgreen extended that lead by two to 36-18 at halftime. Belgreen dominated the third quarter, outscoring Sheffield 23-6 to take a 59-24 lead into the fourth quarter. Belgreen claimed the 64-28.

Gabbie Moore and Emma Dempsey led Belgreen with 16 points each. Katie Dempsey added nine points. Jasmine Martin finished with seven points and also surpassed the 1,000 career point mark in the third quarter of the game. Autumn Bragwell and Gracie Dempsey scored five points each. Ansley Tate added four points and Emma Willingham two points.

Callie Barber was crowned Belgreen’s 2017 Homecoming Queen by her sister Shellie Barber, who was crowned homecoming queen in 2016.

In other recent basketball action, the varsity girls struggled against the Colbert County Indians, losing 76-35. Martin led Belgreen with nine points. Ansley Tate and Emma Dempsey followed with five points each. Gabbie Moore, Katie Dempsey and Gracie Dempsey added four points. Camie Terrell finished with two points.
