Homefolks U.S.A. – We should all be thankful

By Bobby Bolton / For the FCT

Hi folks,

In the last several installments of Homefolks U.S.A., we have talked a lot about the month of November and Thanksgiving. Truly, this is the month when most everyone takes into account the many things we should be thankful for.

After the month passes, we will gear up for the rush season, and we sometimes forget to remain thankful. There is so much to do in such a very short time, and this brings so much anxiety and confusion. We want the Christmas season to be over, and we all look forward to a new year.

There’s another holiday that takes place during the month of November, and we should all really observe this holiday and pause to remember what this day is all about.

This holiday is Veterans Day.

We should all be thankful this day was set aside to remember all the people who have served this country – the brave people who have done their part to keep us free.

Many of our towns, large and small, celebrate this day with big parades. We have people who ride in automobiles as grand marshals or just take part in the beautiful parades. For all those who make these events possible, we say a big thank you for a job well done.

I would hope that in the years ahead, the parades and events would grow larger and be attended by more and more people each year.

This is a part of our history that we should never forget. Our World War II veterans are leaving at a very rapid rate. Not a lot of them remain. That was the Great War, and a special generation took care of the business at hand.

Last week we said our goodbyes to a special lady, Mrs. Myel Martin. She was such a sweet and caring lady.

I remember well when she worked with the kidney dialysis project here in Franklin County. She always attended the meetings and provided everything possible, from the physical support to financial and to those who were on the dialysis program. Her work and good deeds will always be remembered.

At Mrs. Martin’s visitation, it was my good pleasure to visit with my dear friend Mr. Loyd (Rooster) Burfield. Loyd has been a great friend to so many people, and it was a real pleasure to share some time with him.

His health might not be as good as we would like for it to be, but he continues to push on. I think it’s just his nature. He is one tough man, and it’s a real pleasure to call him my friend.

People like Loyd Burfield are a real inspiration to everyone who knows them. We wish Loyd the best in the days ahead.

Til next time,

Your friend,

Bobby
