Inspiring creators to speak at RPL

Inspiration can come from many sources. Some people find it in song. Some people find it in dance. Some find it in writing, and some even find it in the art of quilting. The latter two sources of inspiration will be showcased at the Russellville Public Library Oct. 24 at 10:30 a.m.

Folk artist and quilter Wanda Robertson will be speaking, along with author Vona Elkins.

Cheri McCain, library board president, said both guests will speak for 30 minutes apiece before a meet and greet begins.

“Wanda will be happy to speak with anyone about her folk art and quilting, and Vona will have copies of her book for people to buy that she will sign,” McCain said.

This event has been in planning for months, according to McCain. She said she first had the idea to have Robertson speak at the library in the spring, when she met her at an event in Florence.

“It was a matter of waiting for the right time,” McCain said.

That right time revealed itself when someone told McCain about Elkins’ book “Ruth: The Woman Who Found Romance in a Barley Field.” The story of Ruth in the Bible has long been a source of inspiration for women, and this fictional retelling of it revitalizes that inspiration.

McCain said she thought it would be a good idea to bring the two creators together for a joint event.

“Wanda wants to share her quilts and the stories behind her individual works and the unique stitching that she does,” McCain said.

Because the two women will be speaking on different topics, McCain said there will be plenty of opportunities for learning.

None of this would be possible without the help that the library receives, McCain added. “I just want to give a special thanks to our local sponsors and our Friends of the Library Group for all that they do for us,” she said.
