Red Bay sweeps Sulligent

The Red Bay Tigers swept the Sulligent Blue Devils last week, setting up a showdown with Lamar County this week to decide who will advance to the playoffs. The Tigers beat Sulligent rather easily, 13-4 and 9-0. Red Bay lost to Alcorn Central (Miss.) later in the week 6-5.

Game One: Red Bay 13, Sulligent 4

The Red Bay Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the Sulligent Blue Devils in the first three innings and cruised to an easy win, despite making five errors. The Tigers scored their 13 runs on just five hits but took advantage of 15 walks by Blue Devil pitching.

Red Bay scored two runs in the first inning. Chandler Allen roped a triple into right field, scoring Kaleb Burroughs. Allen scored later on a passed ball. Sulligent picked up a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 2-1.

Red Bay scored two more runs in the top of the second inning. Skylar Brazil stole home, and Max Bullen scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead. Red Bay extended the lead to 5-1 in the third inning on steal of home by Hayden Murray.

Sulligent scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Tigers’ lead to 5-4, but Red Bay broke the game open with four runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh inning: Brazil scored on an RBI single by Kolby Bragwell; Bullen, Burroughs, and Bragwell all scored on bases-loaded walks; Brazil scored again on an RBI single by Bragwell; Burroughs scored on a fielder’s choice; and Bragwell scored on a double by Murray.

Bragwell led the way for Red Bay, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Allen went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored. Murray had two RBIs. Burroughs and Brazil both scored three runs. Bullen scored two runs. Allen had a triple, and Murray had a double.

Red Bay 9, Sulligent 0

Allen was one batter shy of a perfect game in the 9-0 win over the Sulligent Blue Devils last week. Allen allowed only one hit, no walks and struck out 18 batters.

The Tigers got their first run in the bottom of the first inning when Kaleb Burroughs scored on a sacrifice fly. They scored two in the bottom of the third inning when Landen Burgett and Murray both scored on errors to make the score 3-0.

Red Bay scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning: Burroughs scored on an RBI double by Kolby Bragwell, who later scored on a fielder’s choice, and Burgett scored on a double by Blake Hester to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Burroughs scored on a bases-loaded walk, and Bragwell scored on a passed ball.

The Tigers got their final run of the night in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Skylar Brazil scored on a passed ball.

Bragwell went 1-for-2 with a walk and scored two runs. Burroughs scored three runs, and Burgett scored two. Murray had three RBIs, and Burgett had two. Brazil, Bragwell, Burgett, and Hester all had doubles. Burroughs had a triple.

Alcorn Central (Miss.) 6, Red Bay 5

The Red Bay Tigers couldn’t overcome a four-run fifth inning by Alcorn Central, losing 6-5 Saturday.

Alcorn Central got on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Red Bay clawed back starting in the third, when Allen scored on a single by Murray, and the Tigers tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when Levi McNatt scored on a fielding error.

Alcorn Central scored four runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead over Red Bay.

The Tigers picked up two runs in the top of the sixth inning. McNatt scored on a single by Kolby Bragwell. Bullen scored on a sacrifice fly to cut Alcorn Central’s lead to 6-4.

Red Bay scored the team’s final run in the top of the seventh inning, when Bragwell scored on an error.

Allen reached base twice, scored a run and had an RBI. McNatt reached base twice and scored twice.
